Tim & Kate's Adventures with Marge through the Heart of Italy
Tim and I are firm believers that you should have fun with art!
Yes, it's a museum and it's full of masterpieces. But you can only look at so many pictures of this painting or that statue. So take a chance and have a little fun. Give a silly pose or try to match the expression.
The photos will be so much more fun to scroll through later!
Take pictures of you with the artShow yourself enjoying the art! | See you can take nice normal pictures.Perfectly fine, it gives the photo a sense of perspective and size. | You can also imitate the art!Doing our best impressions of Apollo and Daphne |

Getting different angles is a good trick tooThis angle shows the incredible ceiling art and the statue and shows how they are connected. | Perspective shiftThis one is from the side rather than straight on. This can also help avoid getting other folks in the shot (in this case a tour group). | Showing appreciation and size |
Giving our best David faces! This is a favorite trick, try to imitate the expressions. | Swan is going to get you! | This trip had a lot of pairs like this and the next oneThis is us getting the selfie |
Second half of the pairThe selfie we took! | PXL_20230915_090536235-web | Thinking about it |
This is also fun.You can tell that Tim comes from Italian stock. | This is the third time we have seen a similar piece. We saw two other versions earlier this year. We plan on adding this photo to numbers 1 & 2 | Pointing at thingsWe actually have a version of this picture from our honeymoon trip. |
Or you can selfie it up like Mom! | Again a different perspective gives an idea of how large this mosaic is. | Imitating ArtThis one was hard to get because of the reflections in the glass |
Art imitating art! This is a fun shot, especially because we saw this piece several days before. | Everyone likes a good butt. | Art imitating art again! This time it's an alabaster version of the famous Disposition in Volterra, appropriate since Volterra is also known for it's alabaster. |
Get in on the architecture too!Don't limit yourself to art. Take all the dorky travel photos. | Alternate anglesHow many times do you ever get to see the back of statues? | Tim imitates Michelangelo |
Touch the brass! You can always tell what part of a brass statue people touch because it will be extra shiny. | Take closer angles tooMaybe not the best example since everyone loves David, but take pictures of your favorite details. | Doing things behind casesThis has been a fun one. |
Another shot from behind the display. | Another perspectiveThis one is more engaging because you have a viewer that encourages conversation. | Weird art needs pictures tooTake pictures of anything that catches your eye, not just the famous stuff. Look at that arc! |
Crowd shots!Yeah you got the people free picture, but sometimes its nice to know what you had to fight through to get that shot. | Show your workSometimes in crowded museums it can be hard to get that money shot. Patience and a little bit of creativity and timing. | Engage with the artWay more fun that just another bust. |
Our tickets have the picture we are standing with! | If you came a long way to see a piece, show your excitement! | Another shot with how many times we've seen a pieceIn this case, we saw this one before in Florence and the Naples version in Seattle. |
Another picture showing our best matching expressions! | My adoring eagle. This was a carry over theme from photos on our honeymoon. | Use yourself to engage with the space |
Perspective to see what we're looking at. | A details shot showing the mica in the wings | Sometimes art is just a little naughty |
Another behind shot | Play with your angles and perspectivesI'm not actually touching the statue but it looks like I am! | Again, take shots of less famous things you like |
Imitating artThese fountain photos were hilarious | Use props that you have with you! | Imitating the art! |
Perspective to show scale | Details of interesting thingsI love his face. Like this boar spoiled his day. | Another details shotThe boar just looks really pleased with itself to me. |
Of course, this shot had to be takenI would not have expected to find a giant religious artifact version of Tim's fan. | Graffiti can be art too! | And expressions are always good |
And another detail shotThis is the tiles in St. Mark's Basilica. They are normally so far away you can't tell what they are made of. |
Rick Steves Europe's Top 100 Masterpieces
My mom got us the Rick Steves coffee table book Europe's Top 100 Masterpieces. We figured it would be fun to keep track of how many we have been to overall and how many we see each trip. One this trip we got in 25, of which were things we hadn't see before (although for Mom all 25 were new!) We did miss a couple, but in Europe something is always off display, closed, or under renovation. That just means you have to go back!
